Cliquez ici pour une version en français After four showings on the African continent in 2010, Hervé Youmbi takes his Totems across the Atlantic. On April 29, 2011 Hervé Youmbi's "Totems to Haunt Our Dreams" installation opened in a stunning one-man show at Axis Gallery (New York). The show took place in the cutting edge space recently opened in downtown Newark (New Jersey) by Los Angeles-based Submerged Art, a gallery cum community arts space that brings in a wide cross section of folks, from art students and high school kids to gang members and art scene mavens from across the New York area. The opening was followed by a massive hip hop 'n punk slam, complete with seriously engaged political lyrics and mosh pit. On the occasion of the opening, the artist traveled to Washington, DC a few days later to give a talk at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African Art on May 3, 2011. While in the US, Youmbi was invited together with Dominique Malaquais to give an artist talk about his project at the National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC.
A few weeks before the opening of "Totems" in New York, a new monograph on Hervé Youmbi was published. Part of a series on SPARCK artists that is a collaboration between SPARCK and French publisher Editions de l'Oeil, its author is Dominique Malaquais.
